Stiff, dry, curly hair!?

I have stiff, curly and kinda dry hair. And my hair gets flat easily. Do you have any suggestions about solving or at least making the situation better?

I used to have that problem then I got a little hair cut... they used a cleansing shampoo and left that on for a little bit (use that only once a week) then I invested in the TIGI line of "curls rock" and I use a defuser now when I blow dry my hair ( and I crunch it while drying it...I flip my hair over)...it's like night and day!

i had similar hair issues. and the problem is that the hair on top is longer than the hair underneath. so it is weighed down to the point that the curls straighten out. what you need to do it to go to a salon and ask for layers, and have to your hair thinned out.

it puts less weight on the curls which makes them form better.and really makes a world of difference.

there is no way i have the same thing if you let your hair air dry, well at least for me it gets really curly but youll probaly never get the spiral curls on top, unless you get a perm =/

Everybody's hair is dramatically different, but normally us curly headed folk do better with layered hair. It gives the curls room to do their thing, so to speak. Here's some more tips:

1. Since curly hair is prone to drying out more than straight, you'll want to make sure you condition more than you shampoo. The added moisture to your hair will help add back it's natural bounce. I also use leave in conditioner to make sure the other products don't dry out my hair during the day.

2. While you're washing your hair, scrunch it instead of brushing or pulling the product out. Same goes for when you towel dry your hair.

3. You can also try using a moose or a gel and blow drying it (upside down) with a defuser. Although, this doesn't work for my best friend - she just adds gel and lets it air dry.

Every girlfriend I know uses a different brand so you'll just need to find the best one for your hair. Which product is best is only half the battle - you also have to learn how to treat it for its most natural results.

My daughter's hair sounds like yours.. very curly underneath and just wavy on top. I'm converting her to the curly girl method and her hair is getting curlier. Once again, I can't recommend Jessicurl enough! You are so fortunate to have those beautiful curly locks, my niece has them and they always look so soft and feminine, I think that she uses Rave, but her hair smells so good. Me, my hair is so flat and thin (like baby hair), it just looks awful, I comb it and ten minutes later it looks like I never combed it. It's so fine that it will not hold a perm, and it breaks very easy. The best that I can do is tie it up and hope it's not a windy day. See how fortunate you are. temporarily-make sure your hair is all the way dry before flat ironing, and you need a good iron like the Chi iron-use a good serum too like Paul Mitchell's super skinny serum. If you wanted to do something permanent find someone in your area that does the Chi transformation straighteners...takes a few hours and a couple hundred but girl your hair will be straight!

It actually works wonderfully on curly hair! After you shampoo, squeeze some cream onto your hands, and moisterize your curls when your hair is still wet (that's the key). It does NOT leave it oily, but soft and the curls a lot more defined. I use it EVERY TIME I wash my hair and it works great!

First go buy some really good curling MOOSE NOT GEL!!!

After you wash your hair take your towel and dry your hair just a little bit.. Take some of the moose and rub it in the palm of your hands. spread out the moose all over you hair but not to much.

then crunch it like take you hair in your hands and close them all over your head... the let air dry then spray with hairspray very fast and IT WORKS!

Depends on the curl your going for, for a beachy mermaid style I scrunch,for a full volume salon style use the iron. I start at the bottom all the way to the root release the iron in a downward motion than on the same strand repeat mid length to the root, prefect spiral.

I have super curly hair. I use Biolage's deep conditioning once a week and I shampoo with Sauve shampoo and condition with Aussie. I leave the conditioner in for about 5 minutes. I feel your pain. I model too!!

i use thermasilk and it has got to be my fave, well.... actually, frutise( or how ever you spell it) it pretty damn good too. but here's what i do... okay when you get out of the shower put you hair up in a towel. do what you gotta do and save your hair for last. once your done with everything, take your hair down and put about a peach size amount of mousse in it. my hair is down to the middle of my back so where ever yours is just use more or less than what i use. make sure that evenly rub the mousse all over. once you have rubbed it all in, scrunch your hair with you hands and start to let your hair form its curls. take the towel and scrunch your hair with the towel to get rid of extra product that can make your hair really hard and stiff looking. once your done doing that you can use a diffuser to dry your hair when your in a hurry or just let it dry naturally. I usually let my hair dry naturally so that its not forced and the curls have time to form themselves. If you decide to use gel i usually use about a large pepperoni size amount in the palm of my hand ( i know, i know great example) Do the same as before and your curls should look great. when your hair is dried up and your curls are done curling, flip your head over and spray the whole thing with hairspray to get some volume. okay well i could keep goin all night so good luck, have fun!!

A shag doesn't work on curly hair AT ALL (sorry!) because for a shag to look right, the ends have to fall "just so" (even though the whole point is for it to look like it just kinda "happened" that way). With curly hair, you never know WHERE the ends will ... end up!

You'd have to relax your hair to get a straight-haired shag look, but I bet it would still be too much work and still wouldn't look right. You could try it, but I'd recommend that you have it done professionally, because chemical treatments can be very damaging if they aren't done correctly (and sometimes, even if they are!)

There are many cuts that work well with curly hair. I wouldn't risk permanently damaging your hair for an "experiment" ... maybe you could just try a wig!

I have versatile hair, so it can easily go curly and just as easily go straight. However, it used to not always be that easy to manage. It has changed over the years. So, from my experience, I would say that depending on how curly your hair is, you should put a straightening syrum on it. Then blow dry it straight. Using a flat iron should help straighten/ smooth it out. You can also use flat iron spray to help make it smooth. If your hair is like super curly and won't go straight too easily, then I would say yeah, use the relaxer!

The only thing I ever really use in my hair is oil. At one time, I used a jojoba oil product, I think the brand was Organics. Anyway, jojoba is closest to our scalp's natural oil as you will find, which is why I got it in the first place. I did tend to get heavy handed in my application sometimes without meaning to, and ended up with the wet curl look quite a few times. My hair is naturally curly though, and I only blot excess water with the towel before applying the oil. I use coconut oil now instead and have changed my method of application, so no more wet curls for me.

IT'S PLAYTIME FOR ME - YEAH!

for thin or fine hair, apply a thickifier (bed head has a good one that smells like grapes - yummy) and pull back a small section of hair from the temple area ( both sides ) and pin at the crown. do the same thing with little sections from behind the ear and at nape. grab the sections of hair between the pulled back ones and pull the hair out just a little ( to make an almost poof ).

if you have thick hair then use a pomade for shine.

you can put little beads in hairpins and pin in the same places as the bobby pins or do flowers (or some kind of bling) or keep it natural. it looks great either way.

this one is super easy to do yourself and looks like you spent forever doing it ( right! it takes about 5 minutes.)

pull back the top (from the ears up) and ponytail.

pull back the bottom (the rest of it) and ponytail just under the first.

each pony tail gets divided into 3 sections.

apply pomade or thickifier to one section and finger comb to get it unfuzzy. bobby pin around that section (hair inside the bobby pin) about 3 inchs from base of pony tail, twist and pin under the ponytail base. 3 more inches, one more bobby pin, twist and pin. do this for all 6 sections.

this looks great for a wedding or a more formal affair.

time: about 10-15 minutes.

ponytail on the side of the back of the head towards the bottom. (loosely) grab tail section and twist to the opposite side. pin (under ponytail holder) into place (looks like a french twist) leave the ends out.

I recently bought a ceramic flat iron and probably have used it 4 times. I got great results, but after doing it back to back in two days, my hair is noticably less curly, especially the front sections of my hair. It is not frizzy and actually feels more soft, but I miss my ringlet curly hair. I can also still smell a burned smell when I wash my hair. Will it ever go back or will have to wait till it all grows out? Any suggestions? It has only been 3 days since I last straightened it.

There's a good chance that you just left it on your hair for too long. Did you use it when your hair was wet? That makes your hair more susceptible to damage. Lay off of the flat iron for a few days and use a deep conditioning treatment. My suggestion is to go to Wal-Mart and buy Herbal Essences Hydration Formula SHAMPOO and wild curl something CONDITIONER. I haven't used the curls conditioner, but's it pretty new and they come in wild colored bottles and the conditioner will sit upside down and be a little wavy in the middle part. The hydration formula is in a pretty sky neon blue bottle. The reason why you probably smell burnt hair is because you had it on a higher setting then what it should of been for your hair type. Are you permanently straightening it or using a flat iron? I'm guessing you mean a flat iron, and in that case, gel sounds like a bad idea. Look around for products that say they prepare your hair to be straightened. Find a straightener that gets really hot (invest in a good one) and that will help make it easier.

Listen personally if you want your hair to be naturally curly and light.. use mouse or curling CREAM.. get rid of gel.. it causes flakes and makes ur hair unnatural..

First get your hair trimmed up. Add a FEW long layers throughout your hair, and cut a couple pieces of hair around your face to the length of the bottom of your chin. It'll make you're face look less weighed down by your hair. Definately don't make the mistake of putting short layers in your hair, big mistake. I've done it, and it takes forever to grow back, and you can never get the look you want.

For how to style your hair...go pretty natural, you don't want to do too much heat styling that you don't need, it'll frizz your hair even more and be more prone to breakage. Apply John Frienda Frizz Ease hair serum (it's probably the most reliable product I hav found for my hair). Scrunch hair when damp with a scrunching product. (Most are the same, so any brand choice you make won't make too much of a difference.) Blow dry for root down to ends (prevents frizz and POOFINESS.) And if need be, curl a couple of the pieces that frizzed up and apply a SMALL amount of mousse onto the strands of hair.

For another way...an on the go type style, and prevents a lot of frizz. Apply the Frizz Ease hair serum to hair when damp, scrunch hair to what you THINK you want it to look like, put it in a bun on your head. When it dries, take it out, and let curls go loose.

For the poofiness of your hair. Try all of the Sunsilk products for Poofy hair, it'll make hair more manageable and softer.

You could try getting a semi-permanent relaxer to loosen up the curls in your hair, so that they hang in an angelic way and not a "Scary Spice" type way. Semi is best in case you want to hold on to your natural curl, it will curl up again overtime though.

Wear your hair in curlers over night or curl it in the morning with a curling iron...or you could sleep in braids for that nice wavey look. Using curlers/ curling iron will not make your hair frizzy and if it does for some reason then put a little haira spray, gel, or my favorite thing to use is "silk drops" by special effects it works amazingly well!

when your hair is wet put some mousse in your hair. Then put hairspray evenly in all your hair. Get a blow dryer with a diffuser (some of the blow-dryers already come with a diffuser, its a part that goes in the end of the blow-dryer and it works like your fingers to scrunch your hair. But if you use your fingers it usually make your hair frizzy). Turn your head upside down and use the blow-dryer with the diffuser to scrunch your hair. Place the diffuser in the tip of your hair and scrunch up, till it dryes. This will give you volume without making it frizzy....i do this all the time and it really works.

If your hair isn't naturally curly, curling mousse probably won't work. If you have to curl your hair in tight curls with no frizz in glossy beach look, towel dry your hair and slick in a little serum (or regular hair condition mixed with hair gel), and then wind up your hair wrapping and tieing it in rags. You can find loads of tutorials. Just don't over wrap up to the scalp if you only want loose curls. Or foam curlers are good. Sleep tight, then unwind in the morning and you'll be good to go instantly. Smooth on a little serum along each curl for a glossy look and taming those stray hairs.

Alternatively, towel dry then use a big round brush (with prickly bristles) to lift the hair away from your scalp. It should cascade down, and then brush through, and either tie in a loose plait (when it dries, this is beautiful and just slightly wavy), or slick in some gel and conditioner.

Don't EVER use hairspray or spray type gel. Stick to things you can apply with your fingers so you can define each curl properly!

(Aveda do a gorgeous serum if you need it, or Tigi, or for budget, treseme. And shampoo with Head and Shoulders!! )

First of all, Just because you have thick curly hair does not mean you shouldn't layer it, its means you need to thin it out and texurize it to make it less "puffy" or "full"....do you prefer not to straighten, or you just think you cant? Straightening the hair gives you the versatility of curly as well as straight. You should get a haircut and tell the stylist to thin out and texturize.

at night before bed. I do this because it takes too much time in the morning to let partially air dry and then do the whole blow out process. I am able to get it perfectly straight with the help of a blowdryer (T3 Tourmaline evolution dryer) and a chi farouk flat iron. The problem is that when I wake up, it is curly again (not as curly as natural, but humid day style curly). If I flat iron it, it just gets that burnt out end look that is gross. So I blow it out dry and flat iron it again. It takes time, but not nearly as right out of the shower. I know that it cannot be healthy for my hair even though I use nothing but the best styling tools and procucts. I have tried sleeping with velcro rollers, but having large cylinders pinned to my skull doesn't make for a comfortable nights sleep. So my question is, is there anything that I can do to maintain my blowout overnight? Any styling tips, products or tools that you can recommend would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

If your hairs in bad condition try some weekly conditioning treatments or over night mask. (try ghd)

Always use a leave in conditioner and make sure you protect the hair whilst blowing and straightening. I find that Aussie miracle hair insurance and Paul Mitchell seal and shine works best for me.

i have the exact same problem. all you have to do is clip your hair alll the way in the top of you head in a bun but not tight because then it leaves a mark. that gets your hair out of the way. in the morning just use the flat iron for any little messed up parts and you can just blow out the end so they won't look crispyy

Use Chi Oil. It works great. If I straighten my hair at night, I usually have to just do a quick 'touch up' in the morning. Your hair gets curly again because of the humidity in the air. The Chi Oil really helps me. Plus, you can use some frizz-free kind of oil. I havent really found one of those that I like.

First get your hair trimmed up. Add a FEW long layers throughout your hair, and cut a couple pieces of hair around your face to the length of the bottom of your chin. It'll make you're face look less weighed down by your hair. Definately don't make the mistake of putting short layers in your hair, big mistake. I've done it, and it takes forever to grow back, and you can never get the look you want.

For how to style your hair...go pretty natural, you don't want to do too much heat styling that you don't need, it'll frizz your hair even more and be more prone to breakage. Apply John Frienda Frizz Ease hair serum (it's probably the most reliable product I hav found for my hair). Scrunch hair when damp with a scrunching product. (Most are the same, so any brand choice you make won't make too much of a difference.) Blow dry for root down to ends (prevents frizz and POOFINESS.) And if need be, curl a couple of the pieces that frizzed up and apply a SMALL amount of mousse onto the strands of hair.

For another way...an on the go type style, and prevents a lot of frizz. Apply the Frizz Ease hair serum to hair when damp, scrunch hair to what you THINK you want it to look like, put it in a bun on your head. When it dries, take it out, and let curls go loose.

For the poofiness of your hair. Try all of the Sunsilk products for Poofy hair, it'll make hair more manageable and softer.

i think you should try curling your hair, but not by perming it. My friend permed her hair and it completely ruined her hair. You could use bed head curlers, that you leave in over night. They work just as well, and then you can have straight and curly hair whenever you want.

Try scrunching your hair first for a couple days. Wash your hair and towel dry it. When it is still damp put gel or moose in your hands and scrunch it upwards to get it curly. Keep doing this til you get the look you like. if you do get a perm get a loose perm. If its tight you will look like curly sue.
